Storm King's Thunder

Preview of Sunday's Adventure Log
It's not too late!

Based on the current discussion of character motivations, thoughts, and goals here is a preview of Sunday's adventure log:

Plagued by apathy and the inability to make decisions the group ends up staying in Goldenfields longer than intended.

Gogor- Appoints himself Chosen Taster of Chauntea.  He spends most of his days in the Yeti's kitchen inventing new things to eat from the bounty of the fields.  He has grown a belly to rival that of even Guh perhaps.  He has also given up on the false god he once followed because this new god has way more food.

Kalius- Has come to love the people of Goldenfields and has decided to settle and put down roots.  These days he has an ever growing family of crows roosting in his upper branches and happy child swinging in his lower ones.

Zhaine- Feeling sorry for the bear's loss he has taken up the role of Bo's lost companion.  The two of them can be found wandering the fields and tree stands foraging for things to eat and stuff in their pockets.

Torelia- Having "taken care of" the incompetent Captain she and Xi have greatly improved the level of Goldenfields defenses.  They now live with their flying cat Rix in a small sunny cottage near one of the walls.

Kithri- The day after losing her soul to the collector she finally gives in and marries Oren.  These days she can be found drowning her sorrows in a flagon of Goldengulp while stuffing her face with Gogor's latest creations.

Taggerspout- Has decided to take over the Black Market's interests in Goldenfields and deviating pretty far from their original plan.  He has taken over the brewery but no one has quite figured out if anything has changed yet…

If this is not how you envision your character's story ending, it's not too late!  Come prepared on Sunday to discuss thoughts, motivations, and goals!

To the Caves (Finally)
Can you dig it?

After what felt like weeks, we finally headed out to the caves to find the rest of the village.  Truth be told, I have no idea why they would go to the caves at all.  "Caves are always full of safety and I will go there with my unarmed family to be warmly welcomed by whatever lives there" said no one ever.  We get to the cave and guess what, we have to decide what to do again.  I swear, we need to decide on premade plans for certain standard situations.  Seriously, I would be surprised if this is the last cave we see. Anyway, we went in through the front door, eh, cave…hole…thing.  There waiting for us was the family friendly non humans that welcomed us and told us that they have the towns folk and they have been taking good care of them.  And there was tea and scones.  I love scones.  But seriously, it was a bunch of monsters that hated us and we killed them.  Also, seriously I love scones.

After clearing out the caves and violating one of their water sources, we came across a short green monster that claimed to be a "child" and was "happy to see us".  I was going to kill it, but then I didn't.  I don't remember why.  Kalius then used his God powers to change into a critter and scout the next room.  Now, this next part will blow your F*cking mind.  The Goblins actually captured and tortured the townsfolk.  In such a comfy and inviting cave!  Well, we were not going to let such manners go unpunished.  We then killed them.  Then we stopped, leaving a few alive.  Still don't know why. We then released the townsfolk and some how convinced them to return to their homes. (Really, a cave!)  Anyway, we then headed back to Nightstone for scones.   I love scones.

Stuff is still Happening
What? Where am I?

I kind of blacked out there (sniff), where was I? Oh yeah, the group went to the keep and talked to some guards about where the rest of the village was, they argued a lot. I was not paying any attention.

We left the keep to head out to the caves only to meet the Black market people coming into town.  They seemed interested in sticking around and kicking us out.  We said no, I shook some hands, we laughed, it was a good time.

We then went our separate ways and decided to sleep in the church for the night since we took too long deciding on what not to do.  In the morning, the elf woke us up to tell us a group of Orcs decided to squat in the town (how rude!).  We decided to tell them on a personal level, with my axes.  We killed them.  It was great, so great even Kalius was having fun!

We made out way back to my favorite Inn, the Bread and Butter.  There we found the Black Market people again and decided to not team up.  I shook hands again and we left.  We then took out another 6 orcs before they retreated.  It was a decisive victory and I was so happy. We met up  with the Black market people one last time.  I shook hands, the ranger took a bag, we laughed.   It was  a good time.  I hope to see them again soon.

Stuff is Happening!
What is wrong with this town?

This town is in need of adventures now more than ever.  In a 48 hour period they have been attacked by Giants, raided by Goblins, infiltrated by black market bandits and stormed by Orcs.  If the the gods wish to take this place, they are going to have to try harder than that!  The Fist of the Dragon Slayer will destroy any who stand in our way!

Following the goblins begin removed, we captured a woman who tried fooling us into letting her escape.  She tried to send word to her companions, but the Ranger shot the beast clear out of the air (a fantastic shot in my opinion, I will keep my eye on her).  We interrogated her (roughly? I don't remember but  she does) and out she is part of the black market (not sure what that even means).  Everyone smarter than me in the group thought it was a bad thing but not bad enough to kill her.  I untied her and walked away out of boredom. I then found flour, a lot of flour.  I took it, 50 pounds of it.

We then proceeded to go to the castle tower where the bridge was broken.  Everyone was taking their time and I was already bored. I tried running across the bridge they created and promptly fell.  the next part hurt me worse than any other pain.  I lost all  50 pounds of flour.  I had great plans for than flour.  I wanted to make bread in the kitchen of the town.  I feel that they would have ample butter and honey to make the best breakfast.  I wanted to make sweet cakes dressed with fruits and cream.  I wanted to make chicken pot pie with the bounty of the town around me (tear drop).  I wanted to feed the party and show them that I am not just a couple of axes and sweet hair.  Sigh…

That went about as well as was expected.
Not my fault.

The other short person in our party1 was trying another one of her "famous" grifts to obtain financing for our journey as well as some support so we would be taken seriously (what fool would take me seriously?).  The mark2 saw right through the ploy and instead of arresting us, he employs us!  In exchange for sponsorship, we have to advertise this little person as out boss and we are performing deeds in his name (lazy if you ask me)3. The good news is that we received a mission from him right away4.  We are to travel to Night Stone (Nightveil?) where it is up and coming or something5.  When we arrived, the place was trashed.  Rocks everywhere6 and invested by goblins.  As per my party's usual methods, we spent a solid hour discussing how to do what we always do and run right into combat7. We did a weird march to the enemy8 while we waited for our tall archer lady9 to soften up the enemy for us.  Then, one of the bastards broke through10 and injured Kalius.  I blacked out after that, but when I came to, everything was dead.  Either way, I am not digging any goblin graves today.

  1. Kithri
  2. Tildin Tifflewinkle the Dragonslayer
  3. Smart if you ask me, since he wants to make money off of his name now
  4. We also got some gear from the dragonslayer. Matching cloaks and raven feather pins that are actually sending stones. A good deal, if you ask me
  5. The town needed help with something. We were to meet a contact within the trading company there
  6. Dropped from the sky, according to Taggerspout. What could do that?
  7. We scouted out the area first, found that there was an attack of some sort that caused the residents to flee and then the goblins came in after. Of course anything that resembles strategy is a waste of time for Gogor
  8. Stayed with the slower members of the party. I'm not going to be by myself when there are two worgs running at us
  9. Torelia
  10. Ran through the smoke that Taggerspout threw down for no real reason

I'm not a great fan of Tildin. He seems to be big on the story and I'm not sure how much of it is true. The tapestries in his library depict grand battles, some of which don't seem possible… But like Gogor said, we're actually getting paid to work instead of just being given a pat on the back. The people of Nightstone ran north, but it seemed like a good idea to make sure no one was left inside. We know of at least two more goblins in the town, but I'm planning for 10 more based on the tracks that Gogor and Torelia counted. We can easily get the jump on the ones in the bell tower and get rid of that incessant ringing, but we've no idea where the rest are. The obsidian stone that the town is named after is missing as well, probably taken by whatever dropped these boulders on the town.

Character Creation

You have plenty of time to think up your characters for this adventure, but in case you need some inspiration you might want to check out the recent Unearthed Arcana articles.  They have been running through all of the classes adding different paths and flavors. They have been running through the classes alphabetically and will pick back on the 9th with the Ranger.  Since we moved the start date back all of the classes will have their new playtest paths available to choose from before we start.

Update: They threw us a curve ball and instead of releasing the Ranger it is an entirely new class today! So I don't know what all we will be seeing before Feb 12th.

All Unearthed Arcana Articles

Upcoming Additions:

  • Jan. 9th- Artificer!
  • Jan. 16th- Ranger and Rogue! (2 new ranger and 1 new rogue)
  • Jan. 23rd- nothing…
  • Jan. 30th- more nothing…
  • Feb. 6th- last chance for it to be the sorcerer before we start playing….

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
